The potomania is an eating disorder, which can be a symptom of mental imbalance. It consists of an uncontrollable, compulsive desire to drink large amounts of liquid without feeling really thirsty. This excessive fluid intake is accompanied by a sensation of pleasure in people with this disorder but may have negative health consequences.

It is very common potomania episodes relate to people who want to lose weight through excessive consumption of water, which seek to “trick the stomach” by filling it with water instead of food. There have also been cases where high performance athletes who use many more gallons of water your body needs, because of concerns they have to prevent dehydration. In these situations should be alert to rule out a disorder due to lack of control when drinking water.

When a person is aware that drinking too much water, about seven or more gallons per day, should go to the specialist in endocrinology in order to rule out any hormonal disorder or other pathology.
Water is the most abundant component of the human body, so much so that represents more than half of body weight, about 55% -60%. To get to balance the amount of water needed by the body, a healthy person needs about two gallons of water per day, which comes from three sources: the fluid ingested, the food they eat and which occurs within produced as a consequence of metabolism, although this amount is small, about 350 milliliters.

Fruits, vegetables and vegetables are foods that contain more water.
The kidneys play a crucial role in regulating body fluids. They are responsible for removing excess liquid to be maintained or in cases of dehydration, producing varying amounts of urine. The body tries to maintain a constant level of total water and electrolytes, including sodium. When this is high, the body retains water to dilute the excess sodium in the middle, increasing the sensation of thirst and producing less urine. By contrast, when the sodium concentration drops too low, the kidneys excrete more water to restore the balance.

The problem arises when there are repeated episodes potomania and maintained, which can alter the functioning of the kidneys, cause the blood components are diluted and an imbalance of fluids and electrolyte concentration in the body. One of these imbalances in the concentration of electrolytes is hyponatremia, which is the body a very low concentration of sodium in the blood (less than 120 mEq / l), which can result in more severe cases, nausea, headaches, tiring easily, convulsions and coma.

The concentration of water is balanced when you balance the daily loss and for this purpose, healthy people with normal functioning of the kidneys and not sweat too much, should drink at least ½ liters of fluid each day. Sweat, a very salty food, vomiting and diarrhea lasting several infections accompanied by fever, cause of the increased daily water needs.

Treatment of potomania depends on the underlying cause. To find it, we should see a doctor, who will review the situation and we will make the necessary treatment, but usually the first step would be to restrict fluid intake to 1.5-2 liters per day at most.
